Cuba Running, Biking and Hiking Educational Tour

April 19-30, 2003

We invite you to join this second running, biking, hiking and educational tour into one of the world’s most intriguing countries.

Co-sponsored by Global Exchange (www.globalexchange.org), this twelve-day, eleven-night tour will focus on in-depth interaction with the Cuban people, their culture, society, lifestyles, and the struggles and successes of this Island nation.  Our unique itinerary is designed to lead us through areas of Cuba’s three mountain ranges. Beginning in Havana, we will explore Cuba from Pinar del Rio in the west to the colonial gem, Trinidad, in central Cuba, and finally spend several days in eastern Cuba, in and around Santiago de Cuba. This tour offers remarkable opportunities to experience the flavor of Cuba from many different perspectives and to discover firsthand its fabulous sights and sounds from one end of the Island to the other!

During our tour, most early mornings will be scheduled for those who wish to run trails, roads or hike in the countryside surrounding our hotels. Moderate to more challenging road biking will be built into our daily travels. This tour will accommodate people at all levels of fitness and capabilities, and riding in our tour bus will always be an option for anyone.

Our Cuban guides are experienced, bilingual tour leaders who are committed to optimizing our daily exposure to the Cuban people. Participants do not need to know Spanish.

The cost of this customized, one-of-a-kind adventure is $2060.

Group Co-Sponsor:

Peter Haney is a builder and teacher (www.rockymountainworkshops.com), and has been running for over twenty-eight years. He has lived and studied in Mexico and Central America and convened workshops in Argentina. He first traveled to Cuba with a Global Exchange biking group in 2001. This experience inspired him to team up with one of his brothers-in-law, Robert McAndrews, and together they organized the first Global Exchange co-sponsored  running/biking tour in Cuba in April, 2002. Robert authored a short story about this trip and we welcome you to read it by clicking on “Trail Running Adventures of AATRA Members” on this website.
