Add some Variety to your Trail Running
by Jennifer Varno

I'm a trail runner, through-and-through. Everywhere I go, I bring
a pair of trail shoes and socks, *just in case* I see an inviting
path, or I pass a trailhead sign that I hadn't noticed before.
While many people think of sleeping in on a Saturday as their
weekend treat, I pick a run. That's my treat.

But, I still like variety. I toss in yoga, swimming, mountain
biking, and sea kayaking into my overall fitness program several
times each month. Cross training is a great way to break up your
routine, strengthen different sets of muscles, increase your
overall strength, and provide a refreshing approach to fitness.
With adventure travel becoming the favorite way for people to
spend their vacations, it is important to be well conditioned.

About two years ago I decided to put together a series of
wilderness video-workouts that could be enjoyed in the home and
then incorporated into outdoor fitness programs. Since I love the
outdoors, including a sense of fresh air and *wild* terrain was
important. The idea was to provide trail runners and outdoor
adventure enthusiasts a video series that they could use a few
times each month to add variety to their fitness routine.

We don't always have the time to set out on our favorite trail,
so this series is a great interim solution. The first video in
our wilderness workout series has just been released and I'd love
to share it with you! It is a 50-minute overall conditioning
workout that combines flexibility, strength, agility, aerobic
endurance, and balance.

"The exercises Jenn incorporates throughout the video make
wonderful use of natural obstacles and her creative approach
captures the true spirit of adventure running. Whether you are a
competitive trail runner or a newcomer to the sport, your outdoor
fitness experience will be greatly enhanced using elements from
Jenn's routines," says Nancy Hobbs, executive director, AATRA.

The first title, All-Terrain Workout Northern California, was
shot in four different locations that included coastal trails,
canyons, redwood forests, and rugged coastline. Please visit our
