Plea from Path Pounder

Letters to the Editor, Running Times July/August 1998 issue

As a passionate ultra-distance trail runner and racer and a fan of trail running shoes, I take umbrage with J.D. Denton’s "Trailing a Trend" ("Shoe Guy," May). While it is true that many shoe companies have over-engineered their versions of trail shoes, that’s no reason to belittle the otherwise successful effort to make trail running more comfortable and safe for those of us who shun paved surfaces.

Trail running and racing have proliferated in the 90s, and we trail runners greatly appreciate the improved footwear that the running shoe industry bestowed upon us. The shoes do not wag the dog. Trail runners are driving this trend, and we are grateful to those shoe manufacturers who have listened to our wishes.
