Off-Track Off-Beat 10k Snowshoe race

 

The 11th annual Off-Track Off-Beat 10k Snowshoe race was hit by less than ideal snow conditions for the third year in a row, resulting in course modifications. Most of the route was covered by 5-8 inches of snow: about 30% less than normal. Nevertheless, snowshoers had fun and some 12-18" deep snow sections kept the races close.

The lead men's pack lost the trail temporarily when they encountered a section obliterated by a group of elk just hours before the start. A bit of cooperative searching located the correct trail after a few minutes, and the race resumed.

Women's winner Ballengee took advantage of the shallower snow to solo off the front to a 4+ minute win, netting 5 primes in the process. Men's winner Sobal had a tougher time of it with an aggressive lead pack of 20, but his front shoeing pace for most of the final half netted him 3 primes and the victory.

Over $1500 in prizes were handed out including raffle items like Northern Lites, Redfeather and Tubbs snowshoes, Saucony running shoes, and Patagonia clothing. Clif Bars kept snowshoers going till the end of the world's slowest 10k.

Numerous runners brought pot-luck food dishes as an alternative to the entry fee, and no one left hungry.
