Wright, Ballengee Dominate Snowshoe Opener at Beaver Creek
More than 230 snowshoers compete in season kick-off

BEAVER CREEK, CO - While the most dominant force in the remainder of the state was wind and snow, Danelle Ballengee and Jeremy Wright combined to create the most dominant duo in the season opener of the Beaver Creek Snowshoe Adventure Series opening event today, presented by Subaru, the Atlas Snow-Shoe Co., Pure Lip, Planet Outdoors.com and the Beaver Creek Merchants Association. Winning the women's and men's 10K divisions in 1:01:38 and 54:01, respectively, Ballengee, of Team Tubbs, and Wright, of Team Beaver Creek, broke a trail that has been covered with several feet of snow and blasted with gusty winds during past week of winter storms that have attacked Beaver Creek Resort.

Said Wright: "There were definitely some sections of soft snow out there today, but for the most part the cold and wind weren't factors for me during the race itself. I just got an edge on that last climb and held it the whole way in." Ballengee, who blazed the trail in the women's 10K, winning her division by more than six minutes, said: "There were lots of hills out there today, so I cramped up a little bit. I had to break trail a lot of the way but I felt pretty good."

In the women's 10K division, Mia Stockdale, of Team Beaver Creek placed second; Kim Bruckner of Team Atlas placed third, in 1:07:04 and 1:08:50, respectively. In the men's 10K division, fellow Team Atlas member Scott Gall of Manitou Springs placed second in 54:03, while Team Redfeather/Saucony's Tom Sobal of Leadville placed third in 55:15.

Tony O'Rourke, Executive Director of Beaver Creek Resort commented on the steep, deep conditions as well: "The snow was excellent out there today. There were a number of sections where if you didn't plant just right you were three or four feet under! That made it fun because you really had to concentrate."

Said Boulder's Brian Metzler, of Trail Runner Magazine: "If you happened to step off course you pretty much went postal!"

All participants praised the level of competition in the first of four events this winter. Said Dillon's Ballengee, "The best snowshoers in the world continue to show up for these races, which makes for great competition. You've got Mia (Stockdale) and Kim Bruckner out there today, and they've both been racing really well." In all, more than 230 snowshoers took part in the event.

Devon Alvarez, of Team Fatty Tuna/VBS concurred: "The best part is the number of competitors from all over the U.S. The athletes are among the best ever. For me it's a privilege to race with athletes of this caliber." Alvarez placed third in the men's division of the East West 5K Quest, with Benedictus Kok of team Beaver Creek second and Ryan Goheen third. Lynne Perry won the women's 5K, followed by Cathy Zitti and Alicia Dow.

The Beaver Creek Snowshoe Adventure Series continues Saturday, January 20 with the North American Snowshoe Championships, where $14,000 in cash will be given away to the continent's finest snowshoe athletes. In addition, the event will be the subject of a half-hour television special to air on Fox Sports Net in February.
