WIND, RAIN, AND THE MT. SI RELAY &
ULTRA, OF COURSE!
The 2002 Mt Si Relay & Ultra Run is history. Again this year, we had to bow to
Mother Nature. Last year we changed the course due to the earthquake, this year it was
flooding. Only this year, we just had a few hours notice (or in some cases minutes) to
make the changes. Road closures due to flooding and downed power lines necessitated
last minute course and Exchange Point moves, which thanks to our great Eastside Runners
volunteers, we managed to accomplish. I am still not sure how we did it. A big Thank
You to all, and thanks to the runners for their patience and understanding.
The 2002 course has been remeasured, and the new distances are listed below.
Leg Leg Total (54.6)
Runner 1 (1) 7.7 (6) 4.5 12.2
Runner 2 (2) 4.8 (7) 7.2 12.0
Runner 3 (3) 5.7 (8) 4.0 9.7
Runner 4 (4) 4.2 (9) 7.2 11.4
Runner 5 (5) 6.1 (10) 3.2 9.3
2002 Ultra Course - 50.0 miles
Winner of the Earlybird Entry drawing: Team 208, "Will Run For Beer". They won
gift certificates from Brooks for five free pair of shoes. There were 20 teams entered by
the early March 1 deadline. See, it pays to enter early. We thank Brooks, a local company
by the way, for their support.
Montrail also donated a pair of trail shoes, awarded to Ultra Dave Dutton, whose name was
drawn at random.
This year no teams received votes for Best Costumes or Best Vehicle. Guess the weather had
something to do with that.
We welcome any comments you want to e-mail to us. One comment so far is to keep the
trail portion. Another was to add a marathon. These and other suggestions will
be given due consideration by the Race Committee. We strive to listen to the
runners, volunteers, and residents to improve the event for all.
Thanks again to all volunteers and runners for making the best of a difficult day.
Hope to see you all again next year.
Sincerely,
Willie Sato
