RICHMOND NATIVES TAKE TOP HONORS IN SAUCONY XTERRA JAMES RIVER SCRAMBLE 10K
A pair of 26-year-old Richmond natives, James Dowdy and Maria Elena Calle, ran to victory
in their respective divisions at the Saucony XTERRA James River Scramble 10-kilometer
trail run in Richmond, Virginia today.
More than 750 runners competed in the race - which started on Brown's Island before taking
competitors on a trek around the James River, across the Floodwall, up an 80-foot vertical
climb, through Belle Isle and back again.
Dowdy finished in 36:40, nearly 40 seconds ahead of Ian Scott from Harrisburg, Virginia.
Calle outpaced the nearest female competitor by nearly two minutes, in 44:49. Both took
home $100 cash and a pair of Saucony Grid XTERRA running shoes.
It was the largest field ever for the third-annual event, held as part of the Nissan
Xterra East Championship Off-Road Sports Festival.
Perhaps the most impressive run of the day was had by 14-year-old Stephen Crafton of
Colonial Heights, Virginia, who finished 25th overall and first of 15 runners in the 10-19
age group.
