Directions: Tyrrell Park is located just off IH-10 in the
southwest end of Beaumont. Take the Walden Road exit and head east on Walden road, go
through the stoplight and the entrance is on your left about 1 mile ahead. There is a
large sign. Inside the park, the paved road makes a large loop (traffic is one-way), and
you will come to the Cattail Marsh area, with a turn-off on your right.
Trail Information: This is actually more of a
limestone/gravel topped road circling the perimeter of a man-made 900 acre marsh. The loop
is approximately 5 miles, and it goes up and down the levees a few times, but is mostly
flat. It's closed to vehicles, but open to mountain bikes and horseback riding (so far,
I've never seen a biker or a horse rider, or for that matter, another runner). There are
lots of ducks, shorebirds, and the occasional birdwatchers, but otherwise, the area is
usually deserted. There is also a 2.7 mile "unimproved" trail, but last time I
checked, the weeds were thigh-high; however, they may have mowed it. A map is posted on a
sign at the trailhead. Bring your own drinking water. I haven't had a problem with
mosquitos, but insect repellant might be a good idea.
