There are some excellent trails here. Right in town, the Deschutes River trail starts at the north end of 1st street, and follows the river for three miles on well maintained barkdust. It is rural in an urban setting, with osprey, deer, and various other creatures, as well as lot of trees and vistas. Just south west of town off of the cascade highway, there is another trail that follows the same river for about five miles in a more rural setting. You're in the woods here as you follow the river and see some amazing lava formations and waterfalls, rapids and cascades, plus the wildlife. I start at Lava island and continue up to Dillon falls. The path is dirt, with moderate hills and turns. At 3500 feet, you get a great workout.
